Arizona Malayalees Celebrate Christmas and New Year in Phoenix

Arizona Malayalees, one of the largest South Asian community organizations in Arizona, celebrated Christmas and the New Year with a vibrant cultural program at the Indo-American Cultural Center, Phoenix, on Friday, December 26.

The evening featured a rich lineup of performances by more than 100 artists, showcasing Christmas carols, instrumental music, popular film songs, semi-classical presentations, and cinematic dance performances. A beautifully staged Nativity scene emerged as one of the highlights of the program, drawing appreciation from the audience. The appearance of an energetic Santa Claus added excitement and joy, especially among children and families.

Fr. Joseph Rajan, Parochial Vicar of St. Mary’s Church, Chandler, delivered a meaningful Christmas message that resonated with the spirit of the season. The program commenced with a warm welcome by Cultural Secretary Vinitha Suresh, who greeted the community and set the tone for the evening. Association President Dr. Rashmi Menon led the celebrations and addressed the gathering.

As part of the event, the Arizona Malayalees Association honored academic excellence among its members and their children. More than 20 individuals received Academic Excellence Awards in recognition of their outstanding scholastic achievements. Association Vice President Simon Francis, along with the Sports Committee, recognized winners of the association’s sports events.

During the program, Arizona Malayalees formally endorsed Dr. Manju Pillai, who is contesting for a national executive position with FOMAA (Federation of Malayalee Associations of the Americas), the umbrella organization of Malayalee associations in North America. The endorsement was supported by Phoenix Indian Association President Srikumar Nambiar and former Malayalee Association presidents Joseph Vadakkel, Bala Ravindran, Satheesh Joseph, and Sajith Thaivalappil. The program was smoothly compered by Sheeba Winjoe, Tessa Jose, Jisha Christy, and Gouri Praveen, who guided the evening’s proceedings.

Prakash Mundakkal took on the role of Santa Claus for the event, adding charm and enthusiasm to the celebrations. East Valley Theaters presented a special tribute honoring legendary singer P. Jayachandran, who passed away in 2025, paying homage to his enduring contributions to music.

The celebrations concluded with an elaborate feast featuring a wide variety of traditional Indian vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. The Board of Directors of Arizona Malayalees expressed gratitude to the community for making the event a grand success. In her closing remarks, President Dr. Rashmi Menon thanked the performers, volunteers, and attendees, and extended New Year wishes to the community.
